Scripture Union Daily Guide 3 September 2024 Outline:
Even though the Levites’ inheritance was their “priestly service of the Lord” (18:7) and therefore were not to be allocated land as a possession (see also Deuteronomy 10:8-9, 14:27 and Joshua 13:14), they nevertheless had families and livestock. Hence, they needed to build houses and have pasturelands.
Numbers 35:1-5 provides an important background to the request made by the family heads of the Levites at Shiloh (v.1). Notice the instructions God had given to Moses long before the Israelites took possession of the land God had promised their forefathers. How well does the church of Jesus Christ take care of the priests, the pastors, and other full time Christian workers today?
Notice how widespread and deliberate the descendants of Levi were allotted cities among the different tribes of Israel:
* the Kohathites (vs.9-28) – allotted cities among the tribes of Judah, Simeon, Benjamin, Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh;
* the Gershonites (vs.27-33) – allotted cities among the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and half of Manasseh;
* the Merarites (vs.34-40) – allotted cities among the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun. How do vs.43-45 encourage you to trust in God’s promises, regardless of the time it may take for their fulfilment?

For further reflection: Assess how your local church takes care of the full-time ministers of the Gospel. Are there adjustments that the church ought to consider in view of today’s passage? Who can you talk to about the required changes?
